The Newest ASUS Netbook

asus eeepc1201ASUS is now ready to release their newest ION netbook, the ASUS EeePC 1201. Hewlett-Packard, Lenevo, and Samsung have all featured new ION netbooks, so you knew that ASUS would be quick to follow.

The ASUS 1201 has many similarities to its predecessors. It still features the Nvidia GeForce 9400M graphics chipset, but now it is bundled with a dual- core N330 Atom processor. The newest ASUS netbook really has been improved in the best possible ways.

I personally really like the look of this netbook. It is very long and slim and is enveloped in a shiny plastic that is available in black or silver. It weighs a mere 3.1 pound, making it the lightest 12-inch screen netbook on the market. The fact that it has a 12-inch screen is impressive, as most netbooks only have 10-inch screens. It also features incredible 1,366 x 768 resolution which is not found in many other netbooks. An element that is new to ASUS netbooks is the full size keyboard, which definitely comes in handy.

The specs on the ASUS 1201 are pretty standard for netbooks. It includes a 250GB hard drive, three USB ports, a media card reader, an Ethernet port, and a webcam. The dual-core Atom processor found in the ASUS 1201 is the first to be used in a netbook. This improves performance considerably. The 1201 also ships standard with 2GB of RAM and features a 6-cell battery that allows up to 5 hours of battery life.

There are two main benefits with the ION platform. You will be able to play all kinds of computer games with absolutely no restrictions and also be able to have smooth 1080p HD playback.

At $499, I feel that the ASUS EeePC 1201 is quite a good deal. With all the standard features plus the dual-core Atom processor, 12-inch screen, and 2GB of RAM, this little netbook stands out among the other similarly priced netbooks. This is definitely one to keep in mind.

Is 2009 the Year of the Netbook?

Netbooks.. the nex big thing?Netbooks have become much more popular in 2008 and with the new year here, it makes us wonder: Will 2009 be the year of the Netbook?

Netbooks are low-cost, highly-portable, light-weight, energy-efficient laptops most commonly used for web browsing and general purpose applications. Since they are small, light and affordable, Netbooks dont have as much processing power and offer less features than a regular laptop. Standard netbooks have a 9" screen, weigh about 3 pounds and cost somewhere under 400 dollars. The netbooks were designed with mobile internet users in mind. Nobody wants to pay thousands of dollars to buy a laptop just to access the internet on the go. And with the increase in demand for mobile internet access, its no surprise that these netbooks are becoming extremely useful and will continue to grow in popularity in 2009.

Sony VAIO P Series

Sony has just announced their mini-netbook at CES 2009 called the Sony VAIO P. The miniature laptop only weighs 1.4 pounds with an 8 inch screen and an overall width of only 4.7 inches. Do not be fooled by its size though it also comes packed with the latest technology including a high resolution 1600x768 display, built in GPS, Intel Atom Processor, and an instant on mode. Expect to see the VAIO P with a starting sales price of $899 and available soon for short term use from laptop rental providers.

Even though the purchase price is pretty high for a netbook, the Sony VAIO P is too good to pass up. Who would think you could pack so much into something this small. It truly does get better every day.

The Shinny New Apple Macbok

Take a piece of solid aluminum leave it in a room with the people at Apple and what would you get? If I told you the new 13-inch Macbook you might not believe that, but it’s the truth. I love when Apple comes out with nice shinny new stuff.

Putting that aside it has some really cool new futures, like the trackpad that has become the button it self, just click anywhere on the pad and your in. It also comes with some power; with 320GB you can load Macbook with your favorite movies, documents and photos. Then it even has the option to upgrade to128GB solid state hard drive with no moving parts. Then add in the 8x super drive and you can burn any and everything you watch.

Of course it is a Macbook so you know it’s iPhone.iPod,digital camera and external hard drive ready. If you opened this puppy up you would find an Intel Core 2 Duo processor capable of speeds up to 2.4GHZ. It also kicks out 1066MHZ DDR3 memory and that by it self gives you the ability to deal with complex files as well as keeping more applications open at once.

What can I say it’s the newest thing out by Apple and they always seem to be one step ahead of the game. Did I mention its shinny?

Asus Eee PC 1008HA Review Roundup

Now that the Asus Eee PC 1008HA is made available in pink (currently available in Amazon.com for $417), I have made some analysis on this netbook. Below are the summary of good and bad for this netbook after reading several reviews across the web.

Asus Eee PC 1008HA Pink
Asus Eee PC 1008HA is one of the thinnest 10-inch netbook around. It has a 10.1-inch LED Backlight WSVGA Screen with 1024 x 600 resolution, an Intel Atom N270/ N280 CPU, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, 10GB complimentary online Eee Storage, and a battery that last for 6 hours usage. The most outstanding features of this netbook is its slim and stylish design. It's just 1-inch thick and weight only 2.2 pounds. And under such thin and light design, this netbook still maintain a decent performance that's comparable to other bigger-size netbook. While the spec claims that the battery can last for 6 hours, most reviews that have done stress test on the battery are seeing 4 to 5 hours of battery life, which is still consider good.

The biggest drawback of the Eee PC 1008HA is however the non user replaceable battery -- you couldn't change to a backup battery yourself when the original one run flat. This could be a big disadvantage for those who need to travel long distance. And another drawback would be the price which is more expensive than most other competing nebooks.

Here are the summary pros and cons for the Eee PC 1008HA:

Pros

  • Extremely thin, light design
  • Spacious keyboard
  • Speedy hard drive
  • More than five hours of battery lif
Cons
  • More expensive than competing netbooks
  • Battery not user replaceable
  • VGA port requires adapter

Get the Most From Your Laptop With Free Downloads

Get the Most From Your Laptop With Free Downloads

Most people want to get the most from their laptops, but many do not know how. More importantly, most people don't know how to do it for free! Yes, there are free downloads out there that can help you with everything from battery life to Wi-Fi. They'll definitely make your life a lot easier! Let's take a look a some of them:

Battery Managers - It seems as though every laptop owner has a gripe about their battery, whether you don't think your battery has enough power or you lose power too quickly, the following downloads will help you keep track of battery life and maybe even get more power out of your charge.

  • BattCursor - This program shows your remaining battery life on your mouse cursor so you don't have to to continued checking how much is left, over and over again. You have your cursor's color and transparency change based on the power level. It also offers lots of little extras including tips on how to improve battery life.
  • BatteryBar - If you don't like the idea of your cursor or pointer displaying battery info, this alternative hows up on your taskbar. It shows exactly how much power you've already used and how much you have left. You can decide if you want it to show your battery life in percentage or minutes and when you hover the mouse over the bar, it'll show you even more info, including capacity, discharge rate, battery wear, and how much total capacity your battery has per charge.

Wirless-Networking Utilities - Most laptop users connect wirelessly. Here are a couple of downloads that can help you find a wireless connection and keep you safe when connected.

  • Hotspot Shield - Anytime you connect to a public Wi-Fi hotspot, whether you're in a restaurant or an airport, you put yourself at risk for hackers. Criminals can find your data packets, invade your computer, and steal your log in information for a number of websites. This programs keeps you safe by encrypting your connection so no one else can read your information. It's easy to install but it will change your homepage and add toolbars to your computer if you're not careful.
  • WeFi - This program not only helps you find Wi-Fi hotspots to connect to, it also helps you find people to connect to, as well. Upon installation, the program lists nearby hotspots along with their information (signal strength, encryption info, etc.). To connect, all you have to do is click it. It also allows you to connect to people who are connected to the hotspots near you and get in touch with them via the program. It can also help aid in secure browsing.

USB Flash Drives - You may rely on USB flash drives to make your information portable but do you ever worry that your files aren't compromised or lost if your computer goes nuts? These programs can do just that...and then some.

  • PortableApps - If your software leaves you with very little hard-disks space, this program will provide you with smaller alternatives. It comes with antivirus utility, a small version of Firefox, OpenOffice (an alternative to Microsoft Office), and other programs that can clear up some of your space. It takes 150 MB once it's installed (or you can opt for the 355 MB full-featured version) and it can be installed on any laptop or netbook, not matter how much space you have available.
  • TrueCrypt - USB drives are great for traveling but what happens if you lose them? All of your sensitive personal files could end up in the wrong hands. This program keeps your files safe from prying eyes by allowing you to encrypt the files and folders and hide them so no one but you knows that they're there.
  • USBDriveFresher - With each use, your USB drive becomes more and more cluttered and even when you delete certain files, you can end up with leftovers you don't need. This program is simple but it cleans the mess for you and sweets up unnecessary files that are plaguing your computer.

Synchronization - If you're constantly interchanging files between your desktop and laptop, it's easy to make mistakes. Pulling up old versions or overwriting new ones can be a problem. These programs help you avoid those mistakes.

  • SugarSync Free - This program not only synchronizes but also serves as a backup program. It's easy to use and offers 2GB of free backup space. It uses very little RAM and a few system resources and can work with your PC or your Mac. Install the software, indicate what folders you'd like to synchronize and it works in the background, backing up your files at the same time. It offers lots of other options such as sharing files and folders with other people and also keeps older files online in case you need them. It only works with two computers, though you can pay a fee to have it work with more.
  • Windows Live Sync - If you don't want to pay the fee to synchronize more than two computers, this program is for you. Sync folders on as many computers as you like, but this one doesn't inlude the free backup. It's easy and straightforward, and you can manage it all from a website. It also works with Macs and PCs.
  • Xmarks - This program synchronizes your favorites and bookmarked sites between your desktop and laptop and on multiple PCs. It even works between browsers and multiple operating systems.

Onkyo's DX Dual-Screen Laptop

Onkyo's DX dual-screen laptopNot too long ago I posted a story here about Japanese company Kohjinsha's prototype dual-screen swivel netbook. Well in response to the innovative new technology, the designers over at Onkyo have developed their own dual screened laptop and while Kohjinsha did come out with one first, Onkyo, it seems, has significantly raised the bar.

As promised at CEATEC, Onkyo's laptop offers dual 10.1-inch 1,366x768 pixel LCD displays as opposed to the 10.1-inch 1,024x600 pixel LCD displays seen on Kohjinsha's laptop. But what is impressive about Onkyo's screens is that they make them better than Kohjinsha's without increasing the overall size of the device.

Onkyo's laptop contains a 1.6 GHz Athlon Neo MV-40 CPU similar to the AMD Athlon MV-40 in Kohjinsha's laptop. Onkyo's has an ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics, 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and 3 USB jacks. Starting off you will get 2GB of memory which is expandable to 4GB. Onkyo's device also comes with a 320GB 5,400rpm disk, Gigabit Ethernet and the 32-bit Windows 7 Home Premium.

What makes Onkyo's dual-screen laptop even more desirable than Kohjinsha's is the price. Onkyo's laptop comes under a price tag of 84,000 Yen which translates to roughly $966 US. Kohjinsha's device comes in at 79,000 Yen which transfers to about $909 US. while this price is less than Onkyo's, you will only get it if you but it directly from Kohjinsha's retail site. If you don't, then you will be hit with a price of 100,800 Yen or about $1,148 US. Overall the DX from Onkyo looks to be a much better deal than Kohjinsha's device. Look for this one to hit the market by late February 2010.

World’s Most Expensive Laptop Costs $350,000: Cheapest Laptop is Just $100

Small world but huge difference. Today, I was searching about expensive laptops and I found one laptop to have price tag of nearly $350,000. It is Tulip E-Go Diamond. From the name you can rightly guess that it has a touch of diamond.

I could find a nice description of this laptop in AMDboard.com:

Tulip E-Go notebook inlaid with solid palladium white gold plates in which thousands of brilliant cut diamonds have been set. The quality is V.V.S. top-Wesselton and the total weight is 80.00 Crt.

The brilliant cut diamonds are microscopic and pave set with surgical precision. This magnificent end result is possible thanks to the use of brilliant cut diamonds with a large variety of diameters.”

I do not how many people can afford this laptop or even how many people are willingly spend so much after a laptop. However, I know that those people who would buy Tulip E-Go Diamond, would simply buy it for status symbol or as a fashionable item not to play games or watch a movie with it. About its technical specification, I am quoting from Softpedia:

The E-Go laptop is hand bag shaped and it is targeted at ladies, so, not exactly for gamers. Though, the specifications are good. The system is based on an AMD Turion 64 processor, with an ATI Radeon Xpress 200 graphic chipset and featuring 1 GB of DDR RAM PC3200 memory. The hard disk can store 100 GB SATA and the display is a 12.1 inch widescreen WHGA, supporting 1280 X 800 pixel resolution.

Also, a DVD-RW optical unit is available, a touch pad, a built in webcam with a LED illuminative point and a microphone for video and voice conferences. The connectivity is enabled by Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g, Bluetooth 1.2, the ExpressCard slot, by four USB 2.0 slots and the 10/100Base-T NIC. Additionally, VGA and S-Video port are available and a SD/MMC/MS/MS Duo card reader.

Tulip E-Go Diamond sound system is a 2.1 one stereo, while the battery has a four hour lifetime specification.”

Only four hour of battery life. I am extremely disappointed. I would not bother to pay $350,000 just to have 4 hours of battery life. Instead, I will try to have one unit of the world’s cheapest laptop at $100. Haven’t you ever heard of One Laptop Per Child project? Of course, if you are day dreaming about Tulip E-Go Diamond then you should not remember it. What is $100 laptop after all. You can find the answer in the project website:

The proposed $100 machine will be a Linux-based, with a dual-mode display—both a full-color, transmissive DVD mode, and a second display option that is black and white reflective and sunlight-readable at 3× the resolution. The laptop will have a 500MHz processor and 128MB of DRAM, with 500MB of Flash memory; it will not have a hard disk, but it will have four USB ports. The laptops will have wireless broadband that, among other things, allows them to work as a mesh network; each laptop will be able to talk to its nearest neighbors, creating an ad hoc, local area network. The laptops will use innovative power (including wind-up) and will be able to do most everything except store huge amounts of data.

Even this $100 laptop will have a way to charge it with alternative energy sources. So, I am a big fan of this $100 laptop. The only problem is that I am not a school children anymore. I still do not have a child of my own either. So, I will have to wait until a commercial version comes to the market at $200 or some more!

Which one would you like to buy?

Second Display Notebook from Asustek: Do We really Need That?

Digitimes has reported about this notebook from Asustek. This notebook has two displays. One is the traditional monitor inside the case. The second display is on the outer side (upper part) of the case. Here is what Digitimes said about it:

At the ongoing Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in San Francisco, Asustek Computer is showcasing a notebook that comes with a small screen on the cover. The "second display" design for notebooks enables users to operate, such as using the email and MP3 player functions, without unfolding the devices.

Similar to mobile phones with a sub display, notebooks that come with a second display are considered a special design concept for notebooks featuring the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system, according to Taiwan notebook makers.”

Those people who are extremely busy and tech savy will surely enjoy this feature of the Asus notebook. For users like me, it hardly makes any difference. I could not find any information about the price of the product. However, I know that this notebook will get popular as its design and color are beautiful too.

10 Things You Should not do With Your Laptop

Laptop pcs are more expensive than desktop pcs and that is perhaps why laptop is still not so common in many parts of the world. Laptop is still used mainly by the businessmen or executives and well off people. However, these days, laptop companies are now trying to make laptops affordable so that ordinary users can buy them. You can do many things with your laptop but there are 10 things that you should not do.

  1. Don’t keep a laptop in too hot or too cold place: Yes, both of them are bad laptop. If you do so, you only run into the risk of losing your data in the laptop.
  1. Don’t browse Internet a lot: Internet is full of spy wares and other malicious things that can harm your laptop. The more you browse Internet, your laptop will be exposed to virus and spy wares more. So, try to keep your use of Internet in a modest level.
  1. Don’t expect that you can play cool games in your laptop: Yes, almost all laptops are not ideal for playing 3d games. First of all, the screen is small and then the processors and graphics cards are not very powerful. So, if you are a hardcore gamer, you will only feel disappointed.
  1. Don’t buy a laptop for doing video editing: Most laptops are not ideal for doing any kind of video editing, animation rendering or even high end graphics design. So, if you are planning to buy a laptop for this kind of work then don’t go for it. You will only get frustrated in the end.

  1. Don’t show off: In this world of fashion, many people want to show off their expensive things to make others jealous. Laptop is still a cool thing to show off but there is a risk too. If you show off your laptop too much then it will become easier for the bad guys to steal it.

  1. Don’t operate your laptop for long time: For desktop computers, it does not matter that much whether you run it 2 hours or 20 hours at a stretch. Often, we keep our desktop computers idle and open. Don’t do the same thing with our laptop. Then laptop may get overheated.
Don’t carry laptop the way you carry your books: Yes, never carry laptops carelessly. Always remember that it is an expensive gadget and you must be careful about it.

600,000 Laptops Get Stolen Every Year: 10 Things about Laptop Theft

Yesterday, I wrote about the data theft through a laptop of GE. Well, many top companies are suffering similar problems these days. I just read a well written report about laptop theft in Red Herring. Laptop theft is now turning a very big problem but few people are aware about it. Even, government agencies are not so serious about this matter. Big corporations are not doing enough to protect data and this is causing a lot of problems.

I am listing here ten things about laptop theft to make you aware about the severity of the problem.

  1. The Department of Commerce of US, out of their 30,000 laptops, has lost 1,137.
  2. Recently, the police department of Britain had to change their security arrangements after one of their laptops containing security measures of the upcoming labor party conference went missing.
  3. Nearly 600,000 laptops get stolen in America every year.
  4. According to Consumer rights protection group Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, ‘93 million data records of U.S. residents have been exposed due to security breaches since February 2005.’
  5. 24 states in USA have some sort of a legislature regarding data privacy.
  6. Companies related to laptop security are witnessing huge growth in their revenues.
  7. Absolute Software has emerged as the market leader in the laptop security field.
  8. LogMeIn, Inc. has come out with a good solution to track the stolen laptop.
  9. Laptop theft is still a smaller problem in Asia compared to US.
If data gets stolen from the laptop of the company you work, you are in a big risk as your information of social security and credit may fall into the wrong hand. This can turn your life into a nightmare considering the high number of identity thefts.

General Dynamics GoBook XR-1

This rugged notebook is the latest product of Itronix. GoBook XR-1 is a high performance laptop which looks very attractive with fashionable design. So, it can make satisfied those users who are so selective about the appearance and design of their laptops. It comes with Intel processor,
1.83GHz Intel Core Duo T2400 and compared to GoBook III, it is very light. Its weight is only 6.8 pound that puts this laptop in category of mainstream or midsize laptops. It has three USB 2.0 ports and plenty of different ports and of course an IEEE1394 FireWire. In this model, Itronix has tried to keep advantages of GoBook III. For instant, it has a comfortable keyboard like GoBook III and the keys are glow-in-the-dark (means you can see the letters on buttons even in darkness) too. Also, it is totally rugged like GoBook III and it is water proof, dust proof and has resistance against dropping, vibration and temperature. GoBook XR-1 has12.1" gloomy touch- screen monitor that can show everything clear even in outdoor. This notebook is twice faster than Panasonic CF-29 and 70% faster than GoBook III. It works with 512MB expandable to 2GB DDRII and 40 to 80 GB hard disk.

Unfortunately, like Itronix’s last model its battery life is only about 4 hours. It is very expensive. The price is more than $4000.

Itronix GoBook III

This Itronix laptop that won IT Week magazine editor’s award in 2005, provides all the desktop computing power. Also, it is total rugged and resists against harshest and toughest environment. So, it is water proof and dust- resistant and very durable in low and high temperature. It can tolerate dropping and vibration too. It can work easily even in extreme temperature between -10 to 140 degrees. It works with a bright semi-transflective 12.1" screen with 1024 x 768 resolutions which is touch-screen. You can use its stylus or your finger. So, both of them make your work easy. Also, it has comfortable and water proof keyboard and smooth touch-pad. Its battery life is not bad about 5 hours. Unfortunately, it is very heavy. It weighs 8.2 pounds and it is very expensive (more than $4000). So, only people with very special works or special organizations can use it. This laptop comes with Intel Pentium M 745 with clock speed of 1.8 GHZ and 512MB RAM can be expanded to 2GB. So, this shows that this notebook has a good performance. Especially, it works with ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 graphics processor. Also, it has 40 GB hard disk that can be upgraded to 80 GB hard disk. It has FireWire, USB 2.0 port and variety of wireless options and fortunately.

HP Compaq Rugged Notebook nr3600

I

This mobile rugged computer is an expensive one which has got good rating from Cnet editors. It resists against high vibration, dropping, humidity, water, dust and low and high and shock temperature. But Cnet editors prefer Panasonic CF-29 more. It is thinner than that Panasonic model but with larger screen- its monitor is 12.1" touch-screen with maximum resolution of 1024 x 768 (XGA) and comes with an ATI Mobility Radeon graphics processor with 16MB memory. Also, it has comfortable keyboard.

Unfortunately, its battery only works for 3.5 hours. It weighs 9.1 pounds which is very heavy that makes it one of the heaviest rugged laptops. Also, it doesn’t have a FireWire and has only one USB 1.1 port which makes me some annoyed. It has a DVD player but not DVD writer. Regardless of those disadvantages, it has better performance than Panasonic Toughbook CF-29 and Itronix GoBook II. This laptop comes with Intel Pentium 4-M processor with 1.7 GHz clock speed and 512 MB DDR SDRAM which can be expanded to 1GB. It has various wireless options. It has 3 years warranty.

6 Top Rugged Laptops

If you have read the article “111 useful Laptop tips”, you can easily notice that looking after your laptop is not so easy. Many of those tips referred to protecting your laptop from vibration, dropping, hitting, spilling, dust and changeable temperature or protecting form extreme coldness or heat. Rugged notebooks have solved these concerns.

Here are four things you should know about rugged laptops.

1. Rugged Notebooks can be used in most rough environments because their chassis and cases are 20 times stronger than non-rugged notebooks whose cases are usually made by ABS Plastic.

2. They have different categories of Ultra-portable and Desktop-replacement.

3. They are often heavy. Mainly, construction workers, emergency service workers, and military personnel are interested about this kind of laptop.

4. You can use semi-rugged notebooks like Toughbook-74 but it is natural they are not as durable as rugged notebooks.

Panasonic ToughBook CF-29

This total rugged notebook is big and very heavy and durable and it is one of the best ruggedized laptops. Cnet editors have given 7.1 score, that means it is enough good but it has some problems that users must be aware of. This laptop has 13.3" light and tough screen but with resolution of 1024 x 768 XGA and it weighs 7.9 lbs. One of the advantages of this laptop is its battery life which lasts for 7 hours. Good thing about Panasonic‘s laptop is that this company uses only its own batteries which are safe. Other advantages are waterproof keyboard, shock-mount hardware and they are safe against dropping. It has 3 years warranty.

Unfortunately, this laptop has only one USB 2.0 port without FireWire and it is expensive for average users. Also, it has limitation for expanding its RAM. It comes with Intel 1.60 GHz Pentium M and 256 MB DDR2 SDRAM-266 MHz RAM which can be expanded to 1280 MB. It has 60GB hard disk.

Dell Laptop with Intel i7 CPUs unveils soon

Laptop computes are being upgraded day by day. People are also being accustomed of using laptop in their life. Now, it is not a part of fashion. We use it in our everyday work. It is thought that laptop will overtake desktop. I think that the day is not so far when we can see everyone using laptop. However, I will give one good news to all laptop users. Dell laptop manufacturer has brought one small chance in their M6500 model. They have included Intel i7 CPUs. With the inclusion of new chipset architecture, users will get more high speed. It may cost you only $2739. However, this price is only for the base unit. The new price will be fixed for the upgrade system. There are two versions of the M6500 mobile workshop. One is called M6500 model and another is called Covet M6500 system. What you will find in this laptop? You will get 17 inch screen, 160GB hard drive, 8GB DVD drive, and 9 cell batteries. So, get your one before finish.

The longest-lasting Mac notebook battery ever

The battery in the new 17-inch MacBook Pro lasts up to 8 hours on a single charge1 and can be recharged up to 1000 times2 — compared with only 200 to 300 times for typical notebooks. To do this, Apple engineers custom-designed lithium-polymer cells to create the largest possible battery, then they went even further: They built the battery right into the computer, eliminating the space-consuming mechanisms and housings that standard removable batteries require. The result is a battery that’s 40 percent bigger than the previous generation and offers up to 8 hours of wireless productivity on a single charge — all in a notebook that’s less than an inch thin, weighs just 6.6 pounds,3 and remains the same price as the previous-generation model.
